Learning Targets:
I learned the history behind how Quizlet was created and all the uses available with the program.

Quizlet:
Quizlet is an online learning tool created by high school sophomore Andrew Sutherland from Albany, California. It originated in October 2005 and was released to the public in January 2007. Quizlet has over 100 million user-generated flashcard sets and more than 40 million monthly visitors as of November 2015. It now ranks in the top 50 websites in the U.S.
Quizlet began as an idea conceptualized by Sutherland to memorize 111 animal names for French class. After he realized how daunting the task of mechanical memorizing was, he sat down to write code for a program to help him in memorization. His first lines of the code were scrapped and then rewritten over the course of 420 days by Sutherland.
Quizlet shared staff and financial resources with the Collector's Weekly website until 2011. In 2011, Quizlet added the ability to listen to content using text-to-speech. August 2012, was when it released an app for the iPhone and iPad. Then shortly after this it released an app for Android devices. In 2015, Quizlet announced it raised $12 million from Union Square Ventures, Costanoa Venture Capital, Altos Ventures, and Owl Ventures to expand its digital study tools and grow internationally.
As a memorization tool, Quizlet allows registered users to create "sets" of terms customized to their own needs. These sets can then be studied under several study modes. In the flash card mode, it is very similar to paper flashcards, users are shown a "card" for each term. the user then can click to flip over the card and see the definition for that term. In the Gravity mode, definitions scroll vertically down the screen in the shape of asteroids and the user must type the term that goes with the definition before it reaches the bottom of the screen. This is one of the "play" study modes. the learn study mode is where users are shown a term or definition and they must type the term or definition that goes with what is shown. After entering their answer, users will see if their answer was correct or not, and can choose to override the automatic grading and count their answer as right if needed. In the Long term learning study mode, users are given a recommended study set based on whether or not they answer study set questions correctly. Repetition of terms answered incorrectly will increase in frequency and a dashboard shows learning progress over time. This mode uses spaced repetition concepts to focus on longer-term retention and subject mastery versus shorter term memorization. Speller is a mode users can have the term read aloud and the user must type in the term with the correct spelling. In the Scatter study mode, users are presented with a grid with terms scattered around it. Users drag terms on top of their associated definitions to remove them from the grid, and try to clear the grid in the fastest time possible.
Quizlet also provides an application programming interface that allows others to access quizlet data. the available functions include uploading and downloading flashcards, modifying users' flashcards, and finding definitions created by Quizlet users.
Possible Uses in the classroom:
You can use this with older elementary students (grades 3-5) and above as a way to review for test and the teacher can also track progress of the class.
How to use with diverse learners:
This would be a good study tool for some students who do well with the use of flash cards, etc.
This can also be used for students who finish early as an activity for them to review with while they wait for the others in the class to catch up.
